Abstract
In this study, reproduction and some biological aspects of Serranus cabrilla (comber) and
Serranus hepatus (brown comber) from Izmir Bay were investigated. The fish material was
collected between February 2007 and September 2008 during demersal trawl surveys carried
out by R/V K. Piri Reis which is operated by Institute of Marine Sciences and Technology of
DEU. Totally, 554 females and 340 hermaphrodite S. cabrilla specimens, and 443 females and
2070 hermaphrodite S. hepatus specimens were examined. The observed reproduction periods
and first maturity lengths for S. cabrilla were between March-May and 129 mm fork length,
and for S.hepatus March-September and 77 mm total length. The mean batch fecundity were
found 2869 and 587 eggs for S. cabrilla and S. hepatus, respectively. Fork lengths of S.
cabrilla ranged between 95-210 mm and total lengths of S. hepatus ranged between 63-119
mm. Both species showed negative allometric growth. Length-weight relationship changed in
sampling periods and for gender for both species.
