Abstract

The aging infrastructure requires innovative solutions through sustainable retrofitting approaches based on novel materials. However, traditional FRP composite systems suffer from drawbacks in terms of their performance and behavior related to the interfacial bonding characteristics, crack formation resistance, and environmental sustainability. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to introduce and optimize novel composite systems for structural applications based on nano-materials added to the FRP-cementitious smart system for the structural reinforcement purposes. The study applies a comprehensive methodological framework including laboratory experiments, numerical analysis, and life cycle assessment (LCA). Both nanocarbon fibers and nanometal oxides were introduced to the FRP adhesives. The material characterization results showed that there was an improvement in tensile strength by 28%, interface bonding strength by 22%, and cracking resistance by 17%. Simulations proved improved stress distribution and deferred debonding damage. The LCA analysis reported 19% improvement in carbon footprint compared to conventional composites.
